Many people look to Archangel Michael or St. Michael as a protector.
Usually depicted as a handsome, muscular man with long hair and large feathered wings. In many works of art and even tattoo designs, he is found wielding his sword against demonic forces.
The sword is the most important element of Michael’s design as it’s the easiest way to differentiate him from other archangels. As a warrior angel, Michael is often depicted wearing armor as well.
St. Michael is most commonly associated with the police force, and the archangel is called upon to watch over all who protect and serve. From medallions to tattoo designs, the angelic iconography of Michael is a common symbol of courage.
St. Michael is also considered by many to be the patron saint of the sick. People battling serious illness might call upon Michael to aid in this battle and rise victorious.
For people fighting chronic disease or overcoming serious illness, an image of a warrior angel fighting disease is deeply empowering.
Because of the beauty of outstretched angelic wings, angel tattoo designs can make especially stunning back pieces. The design is also common on the upper arm, especially the user’s dominant or “sword” arm.
When considering a design, you may also wish to add some of the text of the multiple prayers to St. Michael that have been said in the Catholic church for centuries.
The words vary between these prayers, but many sentiments and phrases remain universal. Perhaps the simplest and most commonly recited is “Defend us in battle,” usually said after invoking the Archangel Michael by his name.
