When it comes to the Vatican Museums, the collections are enormous, as in twenty-thousand pieces on display at a given time, enormous. Of course, there are near seventy-thousand pieces in total in the complete, non-public facing collection.
As you walk through the 24 galleries, you’ll encounter everything from Caravaggio The Entombment of Christ to the Titian Frari Madonna, Filippo Lippi Marsuppini Coronation, and beyond.
If you don’t immediately recognize the names above, perhaps works by Pablo Picasso, Vincent van Gogh, or Salvador Dali will catch your interest. Even the structures themselves feature attractive works of architecture such as the Bramante Staircase and well-landscaped lush exterior courtyard.
While the primary artwork on display is religious, it was refreshing to view all archaeological excavations and Ancient Egypt artifacts. Needless to say, there’s truly something for everyone, even if you’re not the religious type of person or a fan of purely paintings. Since the 17th-century, different popes have built up the collection, offering unique additions over the years too.
To end the tour, we make a stop in the Sistine Chapel, where the Michelangelo ceiling was on display for all to see. The elegant art piece is truly captivating, with many details and stories to ponder over. The photos really do speak for themselves.
